Is a dog supposed to lick baby newborn kittens that a cat of our household had? Is it normal?
My cat that we have had for 4 years or so has had her 4-5 litter 2 weeks ago. Our 6 year old dog who is still very lively and all has been fixed and has never had a litter of her own. She licks their bottoms and heads and guards them and growls at anyone who gets too close. Is this normal?
Yes, it’s perfectly normal. Since both she and the cat belong to the same “family,” she is treating them as her own puppies. Since your dog is female, it’s likely that seeing the kittens has triggered her maternal hormones, the ones that would kick in if she did have her own puppies. Mother nature does that to make sure the mothers don’t confuse their babies for prey, and mother them instead of eating them!
Two problems that may come of this:
Make sure she is not getting in between the mother cat and her kittens because, as much as your dog loves them, they cannot survive without their mother!
Ideally she should let humans handle the kittens. This early on it’s not a problem but in a week or two you should start handling the kittens a lot to get them used to human contact.
Congrats to the new “moms”!
