What to know when buying a baby car seat by Imran Ali
The best option for you when choosing a baby car seat is to make sure it fits your car, matches your budget and that the baby fits comfortably into the seat as seats are made for different weights and ages. All baby car seats that are sold in stores would have already passed safety standards but the concern is that you install the baby seat properly into your vehicle and you know how to safely strap your baby into the seat. A good idea is to drive to the store when buying the car seat and ask the store assistant demonstrate how to install the car seat correctly following manufacturers instructions.
Rear facing or front facing seat? The guidelines recommend that rear facing baby car seats be used by infants that weigh up to 20lb and their head should be no less than 1″ below the car seat. Any child above 20lb in weight should be using front facing seats making sure that the baby’s head is not more then 2″ above the seat. So usually a child more then 1 year old should be using a front facing car seat.
Stay clear of used car seats, you have no guarantee that there is no fault in the car seat or that there has been any alterations made to the car seat. If you do not know the crash history of the car seat stay clear as any car seat that has already been in a crash could have sustained damage unknown to the seller. Only buy used baby car seats from trusted friends or family members. Do not use any add on’s or accessories like positioners or belt ratchets that do not come with the car seat when buying it as they will not fit the seat properly and have not been crash tested with the car seat so they can cause injury during a crash.
