The funnest and safest play yards for babies   by Shawn Manaher

Baby play yards are great for keeping babies safe. Rather, they are used indoors or outdoors. There are lots of play yards for babies and toddlers. Some people have built their own using PVC pipes and fencing, but those homemade pens are not evaluated by safety experts and wire can be harmful to babies and toddlers. An outdoor floor for a play yard could be natural grass, but a tarp would be safer and better especially for small babies who love to put everything in their mouth, and see nothing wrong with eating dirt and any worms that come with it. One of the best types of flooring for indoor or outdoor use is interlocking foam mats.

Interlocking foam mats are soft and cushiony. They are reasonably priced and come in a large variety of bright colors and styles. Some have the alphabet, because it is never too early to start babies education. The mats are easy to clean and resistance to outdoor weather. They have even been used in the bottom of homemade sand boxes.

Baby play yards are usually made of plastic panels and around twenty-six inches high. The size of the yard depends on the number of panels you buy. Six North States Superyard XT panels make a play area that is 18.5 square feet and costs around fifty to sixty dollars. If you want more room, just buy more panels – as many you need. They are interlocking and moveable so you can arrange the shape and fold them up when you are not using them. You could use them to make a long fence across part of your house or across a room if you want to keep the baby or toddler on his or her half.

Fancier play yards, like Friendly Toys Playzone with sounds and lights, can run more than a hundred dollars. Toys are an important part of a play yard for babies. Playing not only reduces crying, but it helps children learn and develop skills. It usually works well to have many containers of toys. Each container should hold a variety of age appropriate toys, and the parent can pick one container to give the baby. When dealing with a toddler it is usually best not to dump out the toys, but let the little one take the items out his or herself. Exploring things one at a time is part of the fun. When the baby or toddler has grown bored with all the toys in the first container simply pick them up and bring out the next one. Maybe you could have one container for each day of the week. Containers can be plastic tote boxes, baby hampers, baskets, buckets, or cardboard boxes.

Play yards for babies can literally be live savers, and parents would do well to get a baby play yard. It can very difficult to baby proof a whole house. In fact, it is pretty much impossible to baby proof a whole house if you have older children with small toys. It is not very difficult to clean a small area, but sanitizing the whole house is a whole other story. Outside, a play yard can allow a toddler the joys of being outdoor watching mommy or daddy doing yard work, without allowing access to the road or driveway. Toddlers do not know better than to wonder off or play behind cars that are backing up in the driveway. Nobody should have to go through that heartbreak. If a new play yard is too expensive for you, start early, before the baby starts to crawl, to find a good deal on a used one. There are plenty out there and they are worth it.
