Japanese Toy Comes of Age by Martin Archi
At one time Japan was known more for its imitation than its innovation; the Country took advantage of its hard working and cheaper labour force to manufacture existing Western products more efficiently and cheaply. Other parts of the Far East followed. This sex aid only copied a female organ; it is a true innovation.
Everyone has a different image of Japan; some think of Mount Fuji, that snow capped volcano, others recall Hiroshima, the Yakuza and the Geisha, all recognise the economic strength that the Country developed Post Second World War from its ability to produce a whole range of products from electronics to cars at all ends of the price range.
While many regarded the Japanese as merely copiers, there is an example of a product in the sex aid market that only followed the human form; it did copy a female organ but it was a genuine innovation when it was introduced just five years ago and it has created a strong place in the market; the tenga.
This sex aid is effectively a replica vagina, made of synthetic material which came from an idea of a young Japanese engineer working in the Motor Industry. He had been thinking about invention but could not come up with a product until one day he went into a sex shop in his home town and saw a range of products presented in such a way that they almost seemed to be apologising for their presence.
He resigned from his job the next day because that presentation sparked something in his mind; he resolved to design and market a masturbation toy, reasoning that it was something that everyone did, and as a consequence there should not only be a great demand for the right product but that it should also be completely acceptable in society because everyone did it.
It was not an easy path from the idea to the final product and it was the path that every inventor faces, with very few successful in seeing their dreams realised. The initial attempts at a prototype were made from clay. It was not a straightforward design and it was sometime before he had one he thought suitable to show a potential manufacturer. In fact, he went to a local film maker and asked for help.
That help was eighteen months in coming with his savings virtually gone. He faced the prospect of returning to work for someone when he was finally called to Tokyo to explain his ideas. That meeting led to production of his idea in the form of an egg, with lube inserted during production. It could only be used a single time and hence if the market liked the product repeat sales would help its growth.
Two million were sold in just over a year, and a new egg was developed to allow for multiple use. The tenga egg was thoroughly cleaned and fresh lube inserted. Sales continued to rise which suggested that the popularity of the egg was growing because the repeat sale element was largely gone as the egg was hard wearing.
There has been an average sale of two million a year since the product first came on to the market and it is sold in over forty countries on all continents of the World. It is a success story for Japanese innovation.
